Used Jeep Cherokee: the years to buy and the years to skip

Every Jeep Cherokee from 2014 to 2023: what each year typically sells for (about $8,000 to $28,000), its crash rating, and whether it's a year to target or skip. The best bets are 2017–2023. Look harder at or skip 2014–2016.

2014–2023 Jeep Cherokee

A compact SUV offering real off-road ability in its rugged Trailhawk form.

Years to target: 2017–2023. Look harder at or skip: 2014–2016. It has a below-average reliability record.

Worth knowing

  • Skip 2014–2016. The nine-speed automatic in these years shifts roughly and sometimes fails. Later hardware and software improved it.
  • The 2.4-liter four-cylinder is known for burning oil, so check oil level and ask about top-offs. The V6 is the stronger choice.

The trim we'd park in our garage

Target the Latitude Plus or Limited with the V6: they add heated seats and a power driver seat, plus a power liftgate on Limited. 2019 and newer got a refresh.

Safety tech

  • Automatic emergency braking: standard from 2022, optional from 2014.
  • Adaptive cruise control: optional from 2014, never standard in this generation.
  • Blind-spot monitoring: not standard in this generation, so check the listing.

Prices are typical dealer and private asking prices from used listings, collected in September and October 2026, for an average-mileage car. Years with too few listings are estimated from nearby years. Crash ratings, recalls and owner complaint counts come from NHTSA public records.
