Used Fiat 500X: the years to buy and the years to skip
Every Fiat 500X from 2016 to 2023: what each year typically sells for (about $8,000 to $17,000), its crash rating, and whether it's a year to target or skip. The best bets are 2019–2023. Look harder at or skip 2016–2018.

Worth knowing
- Skip 2016–2018. The 2.4-liter with the nine-speed automatic drew many complaints about rough shifting, hesitation and oil consumption.
- 2016: owner complaints spike (154, mostly the engine).
- Reliability and resale are weak, the automatic can be clumsy, and dealer support has thinned as Fiat's US presence shrank.
The trim we'd park in our garage
Look for a 2019 or later model with the 1.3-liter turbo, which is stronger and more efficient than the old 2.4, and the Trekking Plus adds leather and driver aids.
On the test drive
Check the nine-speed automatic for clunky low-speed shifts and hesitation when pulling away. Get a pre-purchase inspection and a vehicle history report before you buy.
Safety tech
- Automatic emergency braking: standard from 2019, optional from 2016.
- Adaptive cruise control: optional from 2016, never standard in this generation.
- Blind-spot monitoring: not standard in this generation, so check the listing.
