Worth knowing

  • 2012: owner complaints spike (396, mostly the transmission).
  • It is cramped, crash ratings are weak, reliability is spotty and resale is very low, and the automatic versions are especially sluggish.

The trim we'd park in our garage

The Abarth adds a 160-hp turbo engine, firmer suspension and a sport exhaust, while a manual Sport or Turbo keeps much of the fun for less money.

On the test drive

Check the automatic for harsh or delayed shifts, and on manual cars listen for clutch slip or bearing noise. Get a pre-purchase inspection and a vehicle history report before you buy.

Safety tech

  • Automatic emergency braking: not offered in this generation.
  • Adaptive cruise control: not offered in this generation.
  • Blind-spot monitoring: not standard in this generation, so check the listing.
