Used Polestar 2: the years to buy and the years to skip
Every Polestar 2 from 2021 to 2025: what each year typically sells for (about $21,000 to $31,000), its crash rating, and whether it's a year to target or skip. The best bets are 2023–2025. Look harder at or skip 2021–2022.

Worth knowing
- Skip 2021. Early cars had software bugs and a recall for inverter software that could cause a loss of drive power.
- 2022: owner complaints spike (305, mostly the driver-assist features).
- Rear seat room and visibility are limited, the ride is firm, depreciation is steep, and early software was buggy.
- Performance cars like this usually cost much more to insure than an average car, often 30% or more. Get a quote before you buy.
- Budget for higher running costs: summer performance tires cost about $700 to $1,200 a set and wear quickly, and brakes cost more than on a regular car.
The trim we'd park in our garage
A 2024 or later model gets the new rear-drive motor with much better range and efficiency; the Plus and Pilot packs add a panoramic roof, Harman Kardon audio, and adaptive cruise.
On the test drive
Check that the infotainment, phone key, and software updates work without glitches, and verify battery health and charging speed. Ask for a battery health report, and compare the range shown at full charge with the original rating.
Safety tech
- Automatic emergency braking: standard from the start of this generation (2021).
- Adaptive cruise control: optional from 2021, never standard in this generation.
- Blind-spot monitoring: standard from 2023.
