Used Mercedes-Benz A-Class: the years to buy and the years to skip

Every Mercedes-Benz A-Class from 2019 to 2022: what each year typically sells for (about $18,000 to $24,500), its crash rating, and whether it's a year to target or skip. The best bets are 2020–2022. Look harder at or skip 2019.

2019–2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class

Mercedes's entry-level sedan, offering an upscale cabin feel and slick tech at a lower price.

Years to target: 2020–2022. Look harder at or skip: 2019. It has a below-average reliability record.

Worth knowing

  • 2019: owner complaints spike (46, mostly the electrical system).
  • The trunk and rear seat are small, the ride can be firm, low-speed dual-clutch jerkiness is common, and repair costs are still Mercedes-level.
  • It requires premium fuel.

The trim we'd park in our garage

Look for cars with the Premium package, which adds the larger 10.25-inch screens and keyless entry; the AMG A35 adds 302 hp and all-wheel drive.

On the test drive

Make sure the screens and voice control work and the dual-clutch transmission engages smoothly at low speed. Pay for an inspection at an independent shop that specializes in the brand.

Safety tech

  • Automatic emergency braking: standard from the start of this generation (2019).
  • Adaptive cruise control: optional from 2019, never standard in this generation.
  • Blind-spot monitoring: not standard in this generation, so check the listing.

Prices are typical dealer and private asking prices from used listings, collected in September and October 2026, for an average-mileage car. Years with too few listings are estimated from nearby years. Crash ratings, recalls and owner complaint counts come from NHTSA public records. Always get a pre-purchase inspection and a vehicle history report before you buy. Spot something off? Let us know.
