Used Jeep Compass: the years to buy and the years to skip

Every Jeep Compass from 2011 to 2025, across 2 generations: what each year typically sells for (about $5,000 to $29,000), its crash rating, and whether it's a year to target or skip. The best bets are 2011–2017, 2020–2025. Look harder at or skip 2018–2019.

2017–2025 Jeep Compass

A much improved compact SUV with an upscale look, a quiet cabin and a rugged Trailhawk trim.

Years to target: 2017, 2020–2025. Look harder at or skip: 2018–2019. It has a below-average reliability record.

Worth knowing

  • 2018: owner complaints spike (941, mostly the engine).
  • 2019: owner complaints spike (329, mostly the engine).
  • The 2.4-liter engine feels slow and can burn oil, and the nine-speed automatic can be jerky. The later 2.0-liter turbo is stronger.

The trim we'd park in our garage

Target the Latitude: it adds alloy wheels, dual-zone climate and access to heated seats over the Sport. 2022 and newer got a refreshed cabin with a larger touchscreen.

On the test drive

Get a pre-purchase inspection and a vehicle history report before you buy.

Safety tech

  • Automatic emergency braking: standard from 2022, optional from 2017.
  • Adaptive cruise control: standard from 2022, optional from 2017.
  • Blind-spot monitoring: standard from 2022.

Worth knowing

  • The CVT is noisy and not very durable, and the cabin feels cheap. Later models offered a six-speed automatic, which is the better pick.

The trim we'd park in our garage

Look for the Latitude: it adds heated front seats, alloy wheels and upgraded trim over the Sport. The six-speed automatic, offered from 2014, is preferable to the CVT.

On the test drive

Ask whether the CVT fluid has been changed, and feel for shudder or hesitation when pulling away. Get a pre-purchase inspection and a vehicle history report before you buy.

Safety tech

  • Automatic emergency braking: not offered in this generation.
  • Adaptive cruise control: not offered in this generation.
  • Blind-spot monitoring: not standard in this generation, so check the listing.
