Used Fiat 500L: the years to buy and the years to skip

Every Fiat 500L from 2014 to 2020: what each year typically sells for (about $6,000 to $8,000), its crash rating, and whether it's a year to target or skip. The best bets are 2016–2020. Look harder at or skip 2014–2015.

2014–2020 Fiat 500L

A tall, boxy small wagon with excellent visibility and a big, airy cabin for its footprint.

Years to target: 2016–2020. Look harder at or skip: 2014–2015. It has a below-average reliability record.

Worth knowing

  • Skip 2014–2015. Early cars used a dual-clutch automatic that was jerky and unreliable before Fiat switched to a conventional automatic.
  • 2014: owner complaints spike (183, mostly the transmission).
  • Reliability is among the weakest of its era, crash scores are poor, and resale is very low, so buy only cheap and with records.

The trim we'd park in our garage

Look for a 2018 or later Lounge or Trekking, which brought updated Uconnect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus leather and heated seats on Lounge.

On the test drive

Check the transmission for jerky low-speed engagement and look for water leaks and electrical glitches. Get a pre-purchase inspection and a vehicle history report before you buy.

Safety tech

  • Automatic emergency braking: not offered in this generation.
  • Adaptive cruise control: not offered in this generation.
  • Blind-spot monitoring: not standard in this generation, so check the listing.

Prices are typical dealer and private asking prices from used listings, collected in September and October 2026, for an average-mileage car. Years with too few listings are estimated from nearby years. Crash ratings, recalls and owner complaint counts come from NHTSA public records.
