Worth knowing

  • The sloping roof cuts cargo space and rear headroom, and V8 models cost much more to maintain than the six-cylinder.
  • It requires premium fuel.

The trim we'd park in our garage

Look for the xDrive35i or later xDrive40i: their turbo six offers ample power for less than the V8 models; 2020 and later cars are a new generation with improved tech.

On the test drive

Pay for an inspection at an independent shop that specializes in the brand. Get a pre-purchase inspection and a vehicle history report before you buy.

Safety tech

  • Automatic emergency braking: standard from 2020, optional from 2015.
  • Adaptive cruise control: optional from 2015, never standard in this generation.
  • Blind-spot monitoring: standard from 2020.
