Worth knowing

  • Tires, brakes and service are very expensive. Earlier cars carry a debated crank hub concern, so a clean inspection matters.
  • Performance cars like this usually cost much more to insure than an average car, often 30% or more. Get a quote before you buy.
  • Budget for real running costs: performance tires often cost $1,200 to $2,000 a set and can wear out in 15,000 miles, and brakes cost more to replace.
  • It requires premium fuel.

The trim we'd park in our garage

Look for a Competition model: it adds more power and sharper suspension over the base M3; 2021 and later cars are a new generation, with AWD on Competition and a manual on the base.

On the test drive

Pay for an inspection at an independent BMW specialist, and look for signs of track use. Pay for an inspection at an independent shop that specializes in the brand.

Safety tech

  • Automatic emergency braking: standard from 2021.
  • Adaptive cruise control: optional from 2021, never standard in this generation.
  • Blind-spot monitoring: standard from 2021.
